Future Of Pamir Still In Doubt

AUCKLAND, Aug. 19. The future of the barque Pamir after she.has completed unloading her cargo is still in doubt. The ship will stay here for at least a forcnight and will then sail for Wellington to complete the discharge of her present cargo. All but 200 of the 2000 tons of basic slag will be discharged at Auckland, the remainder and the cement being consigned to Wellington. The futiire of 'the barque will probably be decided by the Governnaentiin the next week or two. The decision can take only tyvo courses — to return the ship to its pre-war owners, the Finnish Erikson Line, or maintain her as a craining ship. The strong section of opinion supporting the second proposal maintains that the return of the ship to Finland would be virtually a gift of her to Russia. Apart from that, it is felt that the barque would pro.vide a unique floating university for young intending officers and seamen. She could con- ; tinue carrying cargoes during training voyages. rFurther reference to the Pamir appears on Page 6.]
