Housewives Hear More About Household Deliveries
WELLINGTON, August 16. Steps would be takeu in. Ihe near future to see wliether or not the delivery of meat could be made jjossiljle, stated a . letter from Mr. Hackett, Minister of Transport, read to tho Wellington Ilousewives' Assoeiation at their meeting. The letter resultcd from a deputation which the assoeiation liad taken to the Minister regarding the resumptiou of household deliveries, particularly bread and meat. In connection with the delivery of bread, Mr. Hackett said the mastcr bakers were to wait oli him to see wliether anytliing could be done to facilitate delivery. This meetirfg had taken place. "It was plain," Mr. Hackett 's letter said, "that Wellington was in a worse position than any other centre. It was stated-, liowever, that tliere was never more tlfan 20 jier cent of bread sold in Wellington delivered to homes and one of the largest bakc in Wellington, althougli having been in business many years, had never 'delivered bread." As the result of the discussion, the letter eontinued, an endeavoui' would be made by some bakers at least to resuine their pre-war deliveries. Already one bakery had sponsored two returned servicemen who were underLaking deliveries at Ngaio and Strathmore Parlc. "It is their intention to eneourage this metliod of delivery and'my departuient has undertaken to do all in its power to assist them in the purchase of trucks and in making sufficient petrol available. to them, and I sincerely ho]je that as the weeks go by, an improvement will be noticeable, " Mr. Hackett concluded. A reply was receiyed from Mr. Nordmeyer, Minister of Industries and Commerce, with refercnee to the assoeiation 's requests that the Govemment would give highest priority in the petrol allocation to merchants who are delivering foodstulfs. In, all. cases whcre petrol was required for delivery of consunier goods, it was made available, Mr. Nordmeyer stated.
