Airman Pleads Guilty To Smuggling Charge
AUCKLAND Aug. 13. A plea of guilty of a charge of smuggling into New Zealand 150 strings of imitation pearls, four necklaces and two ^racelets was entered in the Magi§trate's Court today by' Leading Aircraftsman Lionel Dunlop Currie, aged 21. A Customs Department prosecutor said that when Currie landed at Whenuapai on June 25 as a member of J Force, he declared for duty three strings of pearls. A constable assistinf - Customs officials found a number of "strings of pearls in his socks apd. under his shirt an4 jersey. He was wearing * another shirt onlwhichj.were sewn the remainder of the goods/ Defending counsel said that Currie was carrying goods for an Australian serviceman friend. The magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, said as the goods must be forfeited he would impose a minimum fine of £25.
