Sunday Sport Deplored
R.
GRICE,
(Tq the Editor) Sir, — It was with deep regret that I read in your report of the July meeting bf the Otaki Borough Council, held on Wednesday last, that permission had been granted to the Rahui Footbaii Club for the holding of a footbaii match qn a Sunday. In, these chaotic and materialistic days, when it is so often statgd by prominent people in all walks of life that only a more widespread acceptance of Christian ethies can possibly save ou^.' civilisation from decay, it says very little indeed for those who, having been entrusted with the high office of the ieadership of the civic affairs of the community, fail to give that very much needed leadership, and . to guide their people in ways that are edifying and benefiting to the Christian ideals. Apart from that, however, does it not show a very selfish attitude on the part of the few, who, having had all day on Saturday in which
to enjoy their sport to the full, now also wish to indulge in that Same sport on Sundays, and so shatter the peacefulness and destroy the sacredness of a day wincn means so much to so many? To allow any organised sport to take place on public property on Sundays is a retrograde and dangerous step for any council to take. It lowers the moral tone of the whole town and it is to be greatiy deplored that the Otaki Borough Council has seen fit to take that step, and to be hoped that its decision will be reconsidered and the permission to play be withdrawn. Yours etc.,
Methodist Minister. Otaki, July 10.
