Otaki W.I.'s Meeting
The Otaki Women's Institute held its monthly meeting on Thursday last, when there was a goodi attendance of members. The president, Mrs. J. Ross, welcomed visit-, ing members and hoped all would, spend a pleasant afternoon. Regret j was expressed at the illness of I Mesdames A. Allan and C. Evans,' and all joined in wishing them a.; speedy recovery. } • Letters from overseas were read and these all expressed. thanks for, parcels forwarded by the insti- j tute. A bracket of songs by Mrs, Riclv was much enjoyed, and Mr. McKenzie gave an interesting talk and | demonstration, his subject beingj Roses. He covered a very wide field , of information, dealing first with! the formation of the original RoseSociety of England.' Mr. McKenzie then went on to explain budding, pruning, planting and manuring of roses. A vote of thanks was accorded the speaker on the motion of Mrs. F. Hunter. Mrs. Hunter was nominated as delegate to the forthcoming biertnial conference. Competitions winners were Mrs. A. Empson and Mrs. Ray Nicholson, while prizes were awarded as follows:— Best flower: Mrs. H. T. Mould;- best shrutf: Mrs. Mould; apron : Mrs. N. Radcliffe. ■ Next month the competition is for the best tea* cosy and for a chocolate cake, to be made from a recipe supplied. The card evening will in future be held in the Commercial Gardeners' room at Otaki Railway. August hostesses will be Mesdames Daggar, Empson, Evans and -Freeman, and Miss- P. Fogden. An appetising afternoon tea was served.
