Suicide Details Should Not Be Published

Received Wednesday, 7 p.m. LONDON, June 30. A eonferenee of the Britisk Medical Assoeiation at Cambridge, carried a resolution by a Jarge majority, urging the Home Reeretary to prohibit newspapers from publishing details of inquests into deaths by suicide. Speakers for the resolutiin said the pulilication of details of suicide cases often caused a great deal of pain and unnecessary sulfering to relatives and those concerned,. and . oecasionally prompted other people with suicidal tendenciqs to attempt to take their lives by the methods disclosed. Several speakers said the majority of British newspapers reported suicide cases with the greatest restraint and discretion, but expressed the view that all that should be published v^as the fact that an inquest had been held, the name and address of the person concerned, and the verdict that he died by his own" hand.
