Air Race From England To Harewood Schemed
CHRISTCHURCH, June 21. An internatioual air race from England to Harewood to coincide with the proposed Internatioual Exhibitiou at Cliristchurch in. 19.13, is now being planned by the Canterbury Internatioual Air Race connnittee. The total prize" money for botli sectious of the race, speed and handicap, will be approximatelv £30,000. The objects of the race are to further public interest and conlidence in civil aviation generally, to proiuote tourist traffic to the Soutli Island, and to assist 1 in obtaining world-wide publicity for. the International Exhibitiou. The Roval Aero Club in England will be asked for its cooperation in the running of the race and tlie international air safety regulations will be the main | guide to conditions. Sir Frederick Handlev Page, tlie noted British aircraft designer, who is president of the ; Royal Aeronautical Society, has been consulted about tlie race and has told the comniittee that it would serve a useful purpose to aviation generally , and British aviation in particular. The scheme has also been discussed with Air • Cliief Marshall Sir Keith Park, who , considers the idea ari excellent one and has olfered any assistance. The comniittee hopes tliat airline . operators will enter standard passeuger | aircraft in tlie handicap section of the , race and bring visitors to Cliristcliurch' for the exhibitiou. Plans for tlie speed section are being eoiisidered and it is , lioped that entries will include new types of jet-propelled conibat aircraft. ,
