Scottish Divine Looks Back at N.Z.
Received Wednesday, 10.55 p.m. LONDON, June .1. The people of Otago and Southland are in some respec-ts more Scottish than the Seots at Home, said the Yery Rev. Dr. .John Baillie, Professor of Divinifv, Edinburgh University, on his return home after representing the Church of Scotland at the Otago centenax-y celebrations. "The further south I went in New Zealand, the more Scottish the people beeame, ' ' Dr. Baillie said. ' 1 1 was touched to iind how loyal they are to Seots tradition. In fact some of the traditions they are upliolding are fading out back here in Scotland itself. Round Invercargill I felt I was baek in the Scottish Highlands of niy youth." Dr. Baillie added that he was verv eneouraged by what he had seen of the Presbyterian Church in Otago and Southland. Referring to New Zealand generally, Dr. Baillie said he found it more or a land of plenty than of wealth. That was a good thingv The plenty, he added, was much more evenly distributed than in the United States wliere he had - spent twelve years.
