May The Wettest Month For 15 Years
May was the wettest month in 1 Levin for the past 15 years according to the records of Mr. H. Har- / vey, Senr., Cambridge Street, Levin. The rainfall for last month was 1 9.61 inches, the next heaviest belng in June, 1947, when 9.44 inches fell. i Drenching rain fell in Levin and ! district yesterday and continuea jthroughout the night. Some heavy Ipeals of thunder and considerable 1 lightning was evident. Commencling with little warning at 3,45 p.m.. i heavy showers lashed the district. The temperature dropped conslaerably and some sleet and heavy hail 'was falling at one stage. Many 1 shoppers were caught and not a few drenched before they could reach the shelter of verandahs Today the Tararua Ranges were heaviiy coatel with snow. Figures given by Mr. Harvey showed that from yesterday afternoon till 7 a.m. this morning 1.64 inches of rain had fallen. Af ter j months of drought, district farmlands and gardens are at saturation point and rain falling now is accumulating on the earth's surface. Flood waters in the Makerua and Moutoa districts still cover tne low lying areas. For the first five months of this year .20:46 inches of rain have been recorded. During the same period last year, 12.92 inches fell.
