Aucklander Guilty Of False Pretences
George James Cullen, formerly a. restauraut manager at Auckland, was committed to the.. Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence when he pleaded guilty 'to two charges of false pretences before Messrs. W. T. Bartlett and W. C. Cannon, J.P. Js, in the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North. The charges arose froin incidents which the prisoner admitted had occurred. at Palmerston North on Becenlber 31, 1947, and January 5, 1948. The first charge was that he defrauded Mark Yurfevieh, a Palmerston North restaurant owner, pf £20 by falsely representing that Ive was the proprietor of - an Auckland restaurant and was in a position to obtain for Yurjevieh, a potato chipping machine. He was also clxarged with obtaining from -Iiori^ May Houlahan, licensee of the Club Ho'tel, tlih sum of £4 by means of a valueless cheque for the sum of £30 7s 9d. Xt was stated that the balance of the cheque wa's in payment for board at the hotel, thus making -the publican's loss:£30 7s 9d, Accused was represented by Mr. W. " W. Meek, of Amikland.
