Aiding and abetting in the supply of liquor to a native at Levin on March 18 was the charge preferred against two Maoris, JOseph Wilson, labourer, and Francis Paraniki Nepia, driver, when they dppeared in the Magistrate's Court, Levin, yesterday, before Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M. Each was fined £4, costs in each case being 11s. A barman employed /by the Grand .Hotel, George Healy, was charged with supplying liquor to a ' native for consumption off licensed premises and further that, being a person other than the licensee, did supply liquor to Joseph Wilson and others after hours. He was convicted and fined £7 10s on each charge, costs in each case being 10s, ; n The licensee of the hotel, Carl Edward Larsen, was Charged with selling; opening s?nd exposing liquor for sale after hours but at the request of the police the last two charges wer.e withdrawn. On the morning of Sunday, March 14, the barman, Healy, was working in the hotel, said Sergeant W. Grainger. The two Maoris and a European went into the bar, the door of which was open, and requested to be supplied with a few drinks. They then produced a jar, which they had filled to take away. The licensee and his wife were both out, and had left Healy in charge. When taxed with the matter next day, the licensee said the barman had only been employed by him for thr.ee weeks, and had been given instructions not to supply liquor to anyone. He understood, continued Sergeant Grainger, that Healy had since been dismissed - from his employment. Though his orders had been disregarded and he was not on the premises, the licensee was precariously liable, said Mr.6 Goulding, convicting and fining him £1. -Court costs were 10s. Mr. D. P. Todd appeared for the licensee and Healy. -
