Tribute Paid To Magistrate

Following the disposal of the business before the Levin Court yesterday, members of the legal fraternity, led by Messrs. N. M. Thomson and J. P. Bertram, remained behind to say au revoir and bon voyage to the circuit magistrate, Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., who, accompanied by his wife, is leaving on six months' furlough, much of which will be spent in Australia. Appreciation of Mr. Goulding's conduct of the court and consideration for counsel was voiced by Mr. N. M. Thomson. They could not see him go without wishing him a pleasant and restful holiday, which he richly dsserved, and a safe return. "We would like you to know that we will look back over the years with pleasure at your appearances in this room. We want you to know how much We appreciate your courtesy and consideration to us." In one respect they were all reluctant to let him go, as temporary changes were sometimes permanent, said Mr. Thomson. He sincerely- trusted that it would not be so in Mr. Goulding's case, and that in six months'* "time he would come back much refreshed., Mr. Goulding would be missed in the court and~at other functions in the town which he often atteiided, said Mr. Bertram. He trusted that they would soon be welcoming him back to the Horowhenua circuit. where his absolute fairness and extreme coUrtesy had won him the deepest respect, He wished to sincerely thank the fhembers of the Bar in Levin for their gesture, which was greatly Uppreciated, said Mr. Goulding in reply. Fortunately- it was not his final farewell and he could . look forward to returning to the circuit work. He had had some very interesting work iii the district, and in Levin particuarly he had dealt with counsel who had always been most helpful. He was looking forward to his leave and equally to his return, and in the latter regard counsel fleed have, no fears.

In order to meet its share of the compensation, court costs and expenses awafded by the Supreme Court against Foxton Borough and Main Highways Board in the Broad case, the Couhcil decided to apply ,to the Local Government Loans Board for authority to raise a loan of £3218 by way of bank overdraft for a term of 10 years or on such other term as the Loans Board approves.
