Traffic Offenders Before Levin Court

On a charge of driving a motor vehiele without a "liefence, broUght by the district traffic inspector, Mr. M. Kehoe, Leon' Max Jones, stud groom, Levin, was fined £1, with' costs 10s, by Mr. A-. M. Goulding, S.M., in. the Magistrate's Court, Levin,- yesterday. Failure to 'possess a driver's lidence and operating an unlicenced •v.ehicle, was the charge preferred by Inspector Kehoe against Norgian Alexander, manufacturers of Dannevirke. The inspector stated that his attention had been drawn to the car by the fact that a trailer it Was towing carried old number plates. Defendant was convicted and fined 30s on the first charge and £1 on the second. Court 'costs in each case were 10s. Charged with, exceeding the speed limit in a motor vehiele in Oxford Street, Nick' Nieholas. cafe proprietor, of Wellington, was fined £3 10s. Court costs were 10s. Inspector Kehoe said the .vehiele had overtaken and passed two others before he stopped it. The driver had stated that he was in a hurry to get to the Palmerston North Hospital. In re4ply to a question from the inspector, he had stated that he had not .been "called for urgently, but was merely visit-_ ing a patient there. Riding an unlighted -bicyle was the charge preferred against William Tamakau, of Hokio Beach Road. Sergeant W. Grainger, who prosecuted, said defendant had stated that he was on his way to a' football 'practice.. "Why did you not have a light?'*' asked the magistrate of defendant. "Have you got one yet?" Defendant renlied that the bicycle was not his and that- he borrowed it. "I'm afraid you'll not attend many football practices if you ride bicycles without lightV' commented Mr. Goulding, when imposing a fine of £1. Court costs amounted to 10s. On „ a similar charge, Kenneth Bruce Souter, was fined £1. He wrote pleading guilty. Court costs were 12s.
