Mayman was thanked for liis excellent work as the committee of braneh's representative. The remits that will appear on the agenda at the annual meeting of the N.Z.E.I., to be held at Dunedin next month, came up for consideration. b After viewing" sffche long list of remits. members imanimously decided that an endeavour be made by the delegate | to see if the Dominion executive jcould concentrate upon the followling matters: A building proj gramme ; reclassification of the | teaching service; and school .supI plies, including text-books, stationl ery, etc. ' The branch had already forwardjed the f ollowing remit: That in 1 1948 housing for teachers be the major plank in the Dominion executive's programme. It was pointed j out that promotion in the service had been greatly curtailed on account of lack of houses. An instance was cited where the staff for the new intermediate school in the Hutt Valley was selected almost exclusively from Hutt Valley teachers who already had accommodation. On account of this shortage the grading list was being nullified, as only those teachers who had -assured accommodation I could apply for vacancies. In par- ! | ticular married teachers were being severely handicapped. This meant that schools suffered because . the best gradsd teachers were not filling the positions «of greatest responsibility. ' Mr. J. E. James congratulated Mr. F. H. Mayman on his promotion as headmaster of the Porirua School and thanked him for his-! excellent service to the branch.' Mr. Burtt also referred to his inter- ' est in the welfare cf the district j Schools. Mr„ Mayman suitably ' replied.
