WELLINGTON, April 9. The personnel of the Defence ScienBflc Advisory Committee astablished by the Government as part of its defence policy outline'd oy the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, this w'eek, was announced today in a joint statement by Mr. Jones and Mr. McGombs. The membership is the seeretary of the Department of Scientific and Industriai Research, Mr. F. R. Callaghan (chairman) , senior service# representatives, Sir Charles Hereus (Dean of the Medical School at the IJniversity of-Otago), Professor T. D. J. Leech (Professor in Engineering. at Auckland .University College), Professor F. G. Soper (Professor in Chemistry at the University of Otago), Mr. T. R. Pollard ' (Canterbury University College). DivE. R. Cooper (director of the Dominion Physical Laboratory) and Mr. C. M. Watson-Munro, of the Department of Scientific and Industriai Research, scientific adviser to the armed forces, an officer of the Department of Works nominated by the Commissioner of Works, and Mr. G. A. Pascoe, representing the seeretary of the Department of Industries and eommerce, The formation of the committee was recommended by the chiefs of staff in consultation with the seeretary of the Department of Scientific and Industriai Research, and was considered in detail • at recent meetings of Cabinet and the Council of Defence. The joint statement said that the committee is representative of'the most eminent scientific thought, both in the Universities and Government Departments. It will advise the Council of Defence and chiefs of staff on scientific questions connected with the formulation of scientific policy in the defence field, advances in fundamental scientific knowledge having "epercussions on 'defence policy, New Zealand's participation in Commonwealth- defence science projects and specific research, and the development of projects' that can be undertaken in New Zealand. It will also make recommendations as to -the best use of the available resources of scientific manpower, materials and monsy l'or defence science purposes.
