GISBORNE, April 2. A young man was Mlied outright and six others injured, mainly severe shock, by lightning at the Matawai dog trials, 47 miles from Gisborne, this afternoon. The victims were ^ — Killed. Graham Hooper, aged ahont 20, single, a shcpherd of 2dotnhora. Injured. Norman Johanson, of Motuhora. Mr. and M,rs. VT. Mitchell, Te Karaka. . Mrs R. Leggett, of Te Karaka. Frank Thonias and'Ronald Harr's. hoth of Matawai. Iiobper was standing on a ridge with a group of others, watehing the trials, when he was struek by a terrific fiash during a thunderstorm about 2.30 p.m. He suffer"ed terrihle injuries. The others in the group were hurled to the ground. • The District Nurse attended the injured on the ground and four were taken to her cottage for treatment. All are recovering. A prize clog was also killed by the flash.
