Gorge Bush Fire Under Control
♦ The forest lire/that lias been burning over parts of the hillside of the Mana-, u-atu Gorge throughont the week, .now is practically nnder controi and provid ed the wind does not change suddenly" the position can be regarded as satisfnetory. Trees on the liills behind the Gorge are still sniouldering, however, and the area will be reconnoitred toeiorrow. The talls of rain on Thursday night together with the good work done by the P.W.D., tlie State Forest Herviee and the Palmerston North Fire Brigade have subdued the flames and there rernain only one or two niopping-up operations to be earried otit. The Gorge' Poad will reriiain olosedto the general public till after the weekend. Though a P.W.i). bulldoker has succeeded in clearing away most of the debris that came down from the clilf f'ace, boulders and rocks are still falling and trailic will be obliged to make a detour via Saddle^Road. 6
