Flood-like Tidal-wave Traps Boys
CHRISTCHURCH, Mai-eh 29. ITwo Christchurch youths trapped on an island in the middle of the Waiau River near Hanmer ye'sterday had to stand by helplesslyT while 'raging flood waters threatened to engulf the'm. The flood encircled the island with the speed o*f a tidal wave. Rocket equipment was used in- a vain attempt to reach the youths who were in grave danger of being swept away. Just when the rescuers were beginning to despair, the torrent reeeded. The ■ youths, Peter Maxwell,, aged 20, of 31 Hardy Street, New Brighton, and Ben Sinith, aged 20, of 160 Seaview Road, New Brighton, were reseued from the island this morning by two deerstalkers on horses. The youths- vyere ithen taken otf the island in. two trips, reaching safety just after daylight broke. They w6te ■ cofisiderably shaken and were beginning to feel the eft'ects of ?the long night.. They had been in Continual danger for f ully ,12 ,,hours and had gone without sleep or food. They had kept a fire, going tHrougli most of the'night'but lightly clad as they were, tjiey. sulfered from exposure. They were taken to the Queen Mary Hospital at Ilanme.r Sprihgs for flrst-aid.
