„■ UbNEBlx, Mareli 9. J lie place of Great Britain aa a bui-w-ark of freedom and tlic need for a realistie view of "things /as. they are" were emjjlui.si.sed bv tiie Gover-nor-General (Eir Beroard Erevberg; wken he opened tlic .second eonference of the 53rd District. of Rotary International in Dunedin to-day. There was truth in the old adage, Sir Bernard told the .')()()' delegates ana wi\es present, that "the price of freedom is eterhal vigilance. " He was pleased to see that the conference was to discuss plaiming anu working for world peace, said Bir Bernard, for it was a very iinportant suhject. "I think most of us who tooK Pai't in two world wars remember the years wlien he had to iiglit against a country tliat was fully armed, " ne said. "I hope you will' remember another thiijg tliat is very iinportant — that the whole of the civilised world aiul the free world is looking to Great Britain for leadersliip, and we must not fail them. I ain certain that the greatest insurauce for world peace is a strong, united England and a strong America. , "There is truth still in the old adage that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Jt is more true now tlian at any time in the history of the hunian raee, and, if we are alile to remam free, we must look at things as they are. We must -take the realistie view of them. The nations with the inost to lose cannot alford to be weak. " It was iinportant, he said, that the delegates should keep before themone of the main objects of the Rotarian movement in New Zealand — loyalty to King and country. These were diffieulf times. As Governor-General he saw probably more than most people w.hile travefiing round New Zealand, and Rotary and other kindred inovements throughout the Empire were a source of strength to her in a time of diffieulty. -
