; • 'WELLINGTON, Feb. 29. Forty-seven runs beliind on the first innifigs, Wellington made a good recovery in the second innings aga,mst the Fijians at the Basin Reserve on Saturday 'and are now 215 runs aheaa with three wickets in hand. A glorious one-handed eatch at short fine leg by Turuva, which was reminiscent ot Hammond's great slip eatch in the M.C.C.-New Zealand test at Christchurch last year, two smart run outs and some. powerful hitting by D. S. Wilson, were features of a bright day 's cricket. Conditions were ideal. The ,gate totalled £464 representing an attendance of 9000. For the two days, the takings are £656. Beautiful soft harmony singing by the visitors just before the afternoon 's play began, made a big appeal to the crowd. With several young players fighting for a regular place in the Wellington representative side, the batting in the second innings was inclined to be over cautious at times, but R. Phillips impressed as a likely opening ' batsiuaii of the future. R. T. Barker's display gave hopes that he may yet reproduce in representativegnmes his attractive club form. The bulk of the runs were scored by two expoaienced ericketers, I). S. Wilson anci A. McLean. The Fijian bowling stood up well to the test. The absenee of a third man in the slips, particularly to the bowling of Isoa, was surprising, the batsmen, as a result, frequently being able to run Ihree for sliots bgckward of point.
