WANGANUI, Feb. 22. Several Centre reeorcls were broken at the 1948 West Uoast (North lsland) •Centre open athletic championships held at Cook's Gardens on Saturday afteruoou auil eveuing. The most tmpressive performam e was that of li. Lambertoa (Feilding) who equalled the New Zealand record in the oue mile walk, in Omin. 26.4sec. lu the oue mile, last year's New Zealand champion, N. Bates, of Stratford, beat tlie existing Centre record by lOsec. in the junior hammer throw, J. Nolau (Wanganui) registered 104ft. l^in.,' a record. iJ. Henderson (Wanganui) won the 100 yards in I0.2sec., a record. P. Henderson also won the 220 yards Mi 22.(isee., a record. M. Kruse (New Plymouth) won the ladies' high jump witli 4xt. 9 lin., a record. Ln the thr&e miles and six miles events, W. J. Wells, of Stratford, won with ease. He did uot sho\v_ ajiy ill effects from his ordeal on the same track a week ago when he collapsed in the long distance event. Bannqr points were: — Wanganui 131, New Plymouth 79, Feilding 45, Palmerston Xortli 44, Stratford 34, Upun alce 34, Taihape 24, Eltham 3, Alton 3. Tlie following teain has been selected to represent the West Coast, /vorth lsland, Amateur Atliletic Centre at the New Zealand championships at Dunedin next month: — Ii. Lamberton (Feilding),
one and three mile walk; S. A. Lay (New Plymouth), Javelin; W. J. Wells (Stratford), six miles and marathon; N. Bates (Stratford^, one mile; P. Henderson (Wanganui), 100 and 220 yards; S. McKenzie (Wanganui), 440 and 880 yards; J. D. Morgan (Wanganui), diseus; G. Bromiley (Marton), marathon; JR. I). McPhunn' (Wanganui), pole vault; C. P. Clegg (Stratford), javelin. F. Barraclough (Opunake) was not a'vailable for selection.
