' A i'eature event at the provint'ial 'junior and women's athletic championships at the Basin lieserve on Saturday, was the invitation senior mile event in >vhich the former Australian S80 yards champion, J. Steveirs, competed against the best of local runners. - It was a great race, the Wellington champion, „X. Sutton, catching Stevens right on the tape to win in 4min. 21^sec. The University walker, B. J. Pphlen, uttempted to brealt the New Zealand record for the S80 yards and he did very well to bo oniy 2-5sec. outside it. N ew Zealand standard performances were equalled in two women's events, tlie high jump and 100 yards." In Ihe high jump, Miss B. Taylor (Karori) cleared 4ft. Oin. Jn the 100 yards, Miss M. Ked'iy, hoider of the title, ran in 11 3-5sec.
