SOME ONLY GO SLOW IN AUCKLAND
AUCKLAND, Jan. 30. There was littie sign today pf a general endorseinent of the go-aJow policy which was to have been pnt into effect by members of the Auckland branch ot the Carpenters' Union on the second lav since the tactica were decided upon as the means of obtaining inereased rates of pay. The carpenters on many ,joi)s in and around Auckland were stili working at a normal rate. In fact, the Auckland Master Builders* Association was able to find only two finus where all members of the staff in the union ivere going slow. The secretary of the association, Mr. Bunker, said both lirms were on .State housing contracts. In one other lirm engaged in the same work 50 per cent. of the employees were going slow. Other men who were
on separate contract 300s were carrying on normallv. In two other lirms where the men were going slow, only a very small proportion of the staff was involved. He stated that the association had over 200 members and from ,ipquiries he had been able to make, few firihs were atfected so far. 'N'umefous reports had been received of the men ignoring the decision and working normally. In some cases requests had been made for the extra payment oi U-d an hour but no go-slow tactics had t'ollowed. Some of the men had told their employers thaf they were not asking for an inerease. "It is becoming increasingly evident that the go-slow policy has not the sympathy of the majoritv of carpenters/' said ATr. Bunker. "On one of the large contracts where the go-slow policy was instituted 011 Wednesday, many of tlic men demaiuled today that a secrer ballot should be taken on the joh. It has been agreed that this should be don'e."
