PALMERSTON NORTH PROTEST
• 1 Palmerston North carpenters and joiners, in common with similar workers in other paris of New Zealand, are pro--testing against recent decisions of the Arbitration Court. At a special meeting called to cdnsider the position, the' following motions, were carripd: — "That this meeting of the Palmerston North Carpenters' and Joiners' Unioi/ considerft the decisipii . of-^the Court of Arbitrafioh ih declining ; to restore ..the* fplj-'margijial rate for sk'fW ■ that has beeii custoniary is a lowering of the status of our trade. We consider this departure is unreasonable and if unchallenged will soon reduce us to n position of semi-sltilled workers with a consequent decline in standard ot labour and workmanship. It also conQicts with the objects of training apprentices to become skilled workers lii a skilled industrv. We therefore
request the National Union to take steps to get the position rectified." ' ' That the granting of exemption from the provisions of the traveilingtime elause to lirms outside the build•ing industry who employ carpenters conflicts with the intention of tne award which sliould place all employers and workers on an eqqal basis, We oppose concessions at the expense of the woi'kers and request "that action on a national basis be taken to remove this discriinination.
