DANGEROUS CROSSING
Subway At Qiieen Street Again Snggested Concerned at the recent fatality at the Queqn Street level crossing, the Levin Borough Council is again making representations to the Railways Department for the provision of a sub-way, or the taking of any oth-gr suitable measure to reduce the danger at the crossing. He understood the question of a sub-way had first been raised in 1928, but- the matter had been dropped, said the Mayor, Mr. H, B.Burdekin. He believed that the survey peg's for the project were still in the grpund. Apart from the recent fatality, two or three lives had been lost at that crossing a few years ago, The visibifity waspoor, particularly from the soiith side. „ Immediately following the recent fatality, he had telephoned the District Traffie Manager and com-. plained about the high speed at which trajns passed over the crossing, continued Mr. Burdekin, The reply had been that trains, particularly during holiday periods, often had to mak.e up time, Altogether he had received no satisfac-:. tion. The construction of a sub-way would mean that a clearanqe of 16 feet would be neeessary, as the road was a main highway. This would mean commencing excavations near the Post Office, and also the gradual raising of the line from the station to probably Kawiu Road. The whole under-' taking would involve considerable expense an'd some real problems. He doubted if the Railways Department would eonsider it. Another.alternative would be to haye an attendant on duty there. Cr. D, J; Sweet^er: Automatic drop gates might solve the problem. I hav©' se'en a number of them overseas and they seemed very good. Mr. Burdekin: That might be a suggestion worth passing on to the Railways Department.
