— =7 ^ Card Winners The Poutu Maori Ran Improv-e ment Committee held another of its weekly* card evenings in Laurvig's Hall last evening. There was a good attendance of players, and the prize-winners were Mesdames R. Roberts and A. Thomson (halved) and Mrs. Ropoama. River Loop Problem Although. no further advice' has been received by the Foxton Borough Council regarding what action the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control C.ouncil is taking regarding the Manawatu River loop following the council's demand for " action, there is evidence to indicate that some action is being taken in the matter. On Monday, Mr. W. J. Guinan, the district health officer, spent the whole day at the loop taking samples of the water at two hourly intervals. .
Low Death. Rate Speaking at the fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday, Cr. B. Clayton, chairman of the domain and cemetery committee, stated that only two burials had taken place in the local cemetery during 1947. The average is 8 to 10 burials per year. Since the cemetery was ! opened late in 1893 there has been. j only two other years which compared with last year's figures, they were 1894 and 1932, ' Horse Sports Committee A meeting of the Shannon Sports Club was held last week to discuss the possibility of holding its annual horse sports during March. As there is still no indication of the mfantile paralysis epidemic restrictions being lifted in the near future, it was decided to hold t'he matter over for two weeks, when something more definite may be offering. Should the restrictions be lifted during the month, there is indication that the fixture will be held.
