Subsidies For River Work At Moutoa
Subsidies totalling £3882 have been granted by the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council toi the Manawatu-Oroua River Board j for flood protection and erosion , control work in the board's area, j according to a report from the engineer, Mr. H. R. Farquhar, i tabled at a meeting of tlie board,1 recently. * At the rate of £4 for £1, a subsidy of £2040 has been granted for! the Te Maire stopbank breach' i below Mr. Allen's residence on ; Cemetery Road, Shannon. The 1 estimated expenditure for this i >vork is £2550. At a rate of £2 for £1,« a Isubsidy of £300 has been approved . f or- Te Maire drainage on an estimated expenditure of £450. The funds required for the development of the Taupunga Cut No. 2 on the Manawatu River ,near Mr. S. W. Barber's property, at Moutoa, 1 amounted to £6100, reported Mr. ' Farquhar. This wa's made up of' £4500 for widening the cut, £300 for ! bank protection and £300 for a j timber deflecting groyne. Construction of the groyne was to proceed at once. The widening would follow if the cut had not deyeloped after the 1948 floods. The board chairman, Mr. J. Chrystall, and Mr. R. J. Law were appointed a sub-committee to confer with the board's solicitor on the question of preparing the board's case for presentation to the Local Government Commission, which will be sitting in Palmerston North on February 25 and 26, to hear evidence on the petition by the Manawatu Catchment Board | for the abolition of the river board.
