DUNEDIN, Jan. 15. -'There were more than the usual number of upsets in the second half of the pairs competition in which four rounds were played on the fourth day of the New Zealand Bowling Association '3 tournament today and'some well known players were eliminated, notable among them being the Christchurch R.S.A. pair, A. B. Parsonage and 0. G. Spe^rman, who went out in the third round. The sky was overcast througliout the day and there was almost an entire absence of wind. Towards the end of th'e day rain, fell. AVhen the fifth round is commCnced in the morning there will be a total of 42 two-lifers engaged and 171 onelifers. Spearman, who won the singles in 1937 and 1941 and skipped the winning rink in 1944, had Parsonage as his lead and the Christchurch R.S.A. pair lost a life in the first round in wliicli thev were defeated by W. Hawkins and G. Lewis (Port Chalmers). Spearman 's pair won the next game and in the third round they met D. O'Callaglian aud M. J. Murphy (Kaikorai). The score was 20-all when the teams came to the last»end. Spearman lay two shots and Murphy had to clraw "absolute '.' with his last bowl .which he did, and the . Christchurch men were eliminated. The Kaikorai pair also lost tlieir second life in the last round of the day. N, E. Jolly, the St. Clair p]ayer, went tlirough seven rounds of the singles play without loss, and with G- H. Jollv,. leading for him, won his first three games in the pairs. In the last game of the day, how-ever, the S1. Clair men met a reverse at the hand.s ,of a solid pair from West End (Auckland). F. Tomlinson, noted as a strong d'river, and J. Tomlinson, maintaining their unbeaten record with a win over Jolly 's pair; 28 — 16. ■W. G. Spencer (Invercargill R.S.A.) and S. Brewer, won ali four games. Spencer is still a one-lifer in the singles and the Invercargill R.S.A. pair numbered among their victims the Hawera pair, C. .T. Roberts and H. S. Maslin (twice winner of pairs), whom they beat in the _ second round by 22 — 16. Earlier Maslin 's pair had accounted for another former pairs aud, fours champion in R. Hawortli (Oanterbuiy). Maslin and Haworth, however, enterod the fifth round with one .life in hand. J. F. Benson (Balmoral), who won his seven games in Ihe singles,... had u. Muller, another well-known Auckland bowler, leading for him but after winning the first game they lost their next two and were eliminated. W. F. Had win, Lower Hutt player who has been prominent in the New Zealand championship competition for many years past, finislied the day with lioth lives in hand. The visiting Britisli Columbia players gave a good account of themselves yesterday and W. R. Scott and S. Fulton, who won three games, numbered among their yictiras M. Sutherland aud a former pairs rhdihpion; G. Batcheier (Invercargill), whom they defeated 21 — 13 in the tirst round, Batcheier 's pair being eliminated in the next game. Two other Canadian pairs comprising G. Scott and J. Sinker and Adam and G. Morriwon, were also left with- 'on6 life at the end oi" the' day 's. play.
