•Received Thursday, 11 a.m. BRISBANE, Jan. 15, ' A Brisbane soldier who, without an anaesthetip and with a mirror, took' out his own appendix in the Malayan jungle, was awarded .the Military Cross ahd Bar at Govern-. ment House. He is a. former captaih, Rohert Keir McLareh, aged 50, whp i§ ' a ! veterinary surgeon at Byndabef g, .. . Natiye guerrillas stood by fluring' 'the operation, which was done with an ordinary knife. and took four and" a-half hours. The incident occurred after Captain McLaren, who had been captured with the Eighth Divis.ion in. Singapore, escaped and joined .the, Malayan guerrillas. ... The citation included .; two escapes from the Japanese, in. one of which he made a sea'voyage .of '270 miles in a hollowed log, parachute. landings in Borneo and. the Philippines and three years fighting with the guerrillas.
