The grass was fired to prevent any possibility of an outhreak by other means, in which case it might get out of control before the arrival of the brigade and constitute a threat to many shops and houses in the vicinity. The fires lit were at times speetacular, particularly as darkness approached and it was not long before brigadesmen had a sizeable audience and no small measure of .as'sistance from children. 1 Hos,es , were kept . manned ;dn readiness for a'n emerggncy " and were brought into use on quite a few occasions to douche adjacent buildings and fences, The dlstriet traffie inspector, Mr. M.
