OUTSTANDING SALE AT FEILDING
A record pnce was paid for a.New Zealaiid bred stud Southdown rain at the seeond day of the Manawata and Wfist Coast stud sheep sale at Feilding yesterday when Mr. J. Bartlett, of Mangaonoho", near Hunterville, paid d2o. •gns. for Arnage 372/46, bred by Messrs. B, Illston and Bons, of Hunterville, Exeepting" for iniported rams, this price; has never been exceeded in New Zealand nor, it is authoritativ.elj' stated in Australia. , The suecessful auctioneer was Mr. Henry Braithwaite, of N.Z. Loan and Mercantlle Agew-y O 3. Ltd, The attendance of the -pnblic was again Jarge and the selling pavilion was crowded to the doors, 'Hight froxn the outset it, was quite obvious buyers were prepared to pay high priees for the rams they wanted and the-- sale organisation provided that last year's most successful breeder ■would havevthe lirst offering. This was Mr. H. J. Andrew, of Maheno, whose PunchbowJ stud is so widely luiown and who last year topped the market with a sale at "o70gns. His'first ram offered yesterday realised 725gns., it being PunchbowJ A219 and tlie sheep was purchased by Messrs. Dalgety .and Co. • for export. His" seeond ram realised 32ngys., and like money was paid for the third while the foitrth was sold for 30(.)gns., giving hijn an average of over 460gus. for the four sheei) offered in the lirst run. liams on behalf of the estate of W. J. Himblett, of Hastings, were nest effered and these also eommanded exeited coinpetition, the First going for 225gns., the next for 380gns. and the remaining two for 200gns. and 350gns. respec•tively, his average being 286gus, Messrs, Hlston and Bons rams were next offered and the high price of 725gns. obtained by Mr. Andrew was then pussed by a sale at S25gns. to be followed by one at 600 gns. to Mr, E. Oameron, of Auckland and one at 575gns. to Mr. H. S. McLeod, of Masterton. His fourth ram made 200gns., giving an average of 550 gns., an outstanding trausaction in the field of stud ram saies. Mr. J. Ivnight, the Feilding breeder, obtained an average of 127gns, for the eight rams he offered and another successful Feilding district breeder, Mr, H. E, Hainsbury, of Kiwitea, who olfered four rams, secured the1 excellent average of 333gns, Some appreciatiou of the buoyancv of the market mav be gathered from tlie faet that the first eight rams offered realised a total of 5030gns., or an average of 628gns. An interested spectator among the inatiy visitors present was Mr. A. B. Duncan, president of the Galloway Cattle Breeders' Association, of Dumfriessliire, Scotland.
