. GREYAIOUTH, Jan. 8. Although double time was payable for work invthe -iixst three working days pf the- New Year — Monday, Tnesday and Wednesday of this week— there jias been considerable absenteeism at ihe Grey district mines. Details are not available • but the output dt the mainUiines on the average has been down by as much -as one-third on iignres established in the last working week in Deeember. Alonday, the first working day of the new year, was the worst dav from the production point of view. The* shorter working day of seven hours being obsevved af the. Dobson and Allsend mines, eoupled with a fffr ther shortening of the day by a series qf morning stopworlc meetings, also had an effect on production. .Double time was paid in the mines for the first tlu-ec days to compensate miners for three sfatptofv holidays- — Christmas Day, j Boxing Day and New 'Year 's Day — included in the annual holiday period.
