State or by private companies, so lt is dillicult to soe on what grounds Mr. Benney niakes so deiinite a stateinent as is attributed to him in attempting to justify purchase of the coal from overseas at the ridiculous cost. "Much of the stockton coal has, in fact, been shown to have a sulphur content of less than 1 per cent., making it idea for the purposes of cemem; manufacture to be undertaken in the distriet. Would Mr. Benney consider such a figure high? 1 1 As for the manufacture of briquettes the 10-year regional plau gazetted for Buller provides specifically for the use of brown coal, slack and bituminous slack for briquette making. The obvious place of such an industry is where the coal is, Why go to Sockburn as apparently contemplated by the Mines Department? Is this one more example of taking an industry away from its rightful economic environment? Is it the kind of decentralisation of industry we have been promised? If this is the answer more will be heard on the subject from those who produce the coal in Buller for the nation 's use," said the authority.
