MASTERTON, Jan. 6. Mr. R. W. KeObell, Wairarapa provincial president of Federate. Farmers, stated today that drough conditions prevailing in the Wairarapa were becoming serious, particularly a. Ihey- aff'ected farmers of hill country who normally- drafted a consideVabh uumber of their lambs to the works " Due to the dry weather these lambs," said Mr. Kebbell, " in many- eases have not the finish that. will bring tliem u{. to the grade set by the meat board. Nol only will these conditions have the eft'ecjt of depressing the store stock mar ket but they will also result in con siderablv less meat being available foi export to Britain beeause the lambs, if not killed now, will deteriorate stib iurther in quaiity. If a lower gra-lt' 'ould be lnstatuted temporarily as was done two y-ears ago, a lot of this meat conld be savcd. This needs to be done now beeause if steps to nieet this posi tion are not taken quick-lyr not only wiil there be less meat for export but also the forcing of these lambs 011 to a market that cannot readily absorb them,. will have an adverse eflPect on tlie price received for all store lambs. |
