FRUIT PICKERS HAVE RAGE AGAINST SUN
DUNEDIN, Jan. 3. Fruit pickers in Central Otago orchards wpre up with the sun today in a desperate eifort1 to pack as much as'possible.befoye the fruit trains lift. their loads at many staging points. Yesterday ;s scorching weather was followed by another very hot day with a clehr blue sky, and temperatures were expected to- kuock the 100 de'gree mark in the sliade again. The hot weather has ripened most of the early fruits, and peaches, apricots, nectarines and eherries are being taken from the trees in a raee against time. - In most districts the season is about three weeks parlier than usual and the burning sun had caught -many orchardists iiot fully perpared for the crops now waiting to be picked. The shortage of pickers is being felt acutely ,in some areas. ' I ■Central Otago fruitgrowers are looking north of Wellington for additionaJ markets nowadays and part of the consignment now being. picked will be taken by air from Christchurch On Tuesday to Auckland. About 600 cases are expected to be carried, worth about £1.200. '
