STATE CONTROL OF BRITISH RAILWAYS

Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 29. When Britain's railway system passes into State ownership on Januax'v 1, 70 directors of the four existing eompanies — the Southern, Great Western, London and North-Eastern, and London, Midland, and Scottish — will retire from service. Th,e oldest of them, Sir Francis Dent, senior direetor of the Southern Railway Company, is aged 80, and the list ineludcs 13 peers, eight baronets, .18 knights, and six members of Parliament. These last, all Conservatives, include Lord Woqlton, former Minlster of Food, Sir John Anderson, former Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Lord Portal, former Minister of Works. At present each of the 70 retiring directors draws fees averaging £1000 a year.
