CAR STRIKES BRIDGE
— OCCUPANTS' NARROW ESCAPE The four occupants of a small sedan car had , a narrow escape when the vehicle stfuck the side of a bridge on the main road, ahout three miles north of Shannon, early yesterday afternoon. The car was driven by Mr.. W. E.. Addinell, of Koputaroa, and he was accompanied by three women passengers. All suifered minor injuries and shock, but were able to return home after receiving medical attention at Shannon. The bridge where the accident occurred has steep and deceptive approaches. It is across the former tramline of the old Maranui flaxmill. The car was travelling north when the accident occurred and some 15 yards of the approach railing were carried away; The1 side rail of the bridge penetrated the front of the vehicle and passed right through to the back seat., It was only the railing through the car which prevented it from falling over the side of the bridge on to the tramline some 14 feet below. The vehicle was extensively damaged. ■
