MAYOR'S SUNDAY
«* old custom to be observed in levin An invitation to attend a special service at St. Mary's Anglican Church on Sunday was last night extended to the Mayor,. Mr. H. B. Burdekin, and members of the Levin Borough Council by Canon G. Y. Woodward. Such invitations to newly-elected mayors and aldermen is a recognised English custom, and dates back many years, A special church service usually followed a procession from the council chambers, and the event was termed "Mayor's Sunday." Though not commonly adopted in New Zealand, a similar service was recently attended by the Mayor and council of Napier. He would like to see afi those who could attend do so, said Mr, Burdekin, particularly as this would be the last attendance * of Canon Woodward as the Rev. G. B, Stote-Blan^y would be returning soon •
'No matter what their beliefs were, said Mr. Burdekin, councillors must all realise the necessity for guidance, both in . the council and their lives, particularly at the present time. It was a "nice : thought" on Canon Woodward's ; part, and he would very much like to attend. It was agreed that the invitation I be accepted.
