Holders of the Wilding Shield over the past two seasons during which they suceessfully resisted six cliaJlenges, Hutt Valley were convincingly beaten in the lirst challenge niatch of the present season, Wellington winning by eight rubbers to four. The l»lders failed to sustain tlieir keen first day's struggle in defence of the trophy, winning only oue further rubber. Rain interfered with play on Saturday aud the mateh was eompleted to-day.
