SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION
The final meeting pf the Shannon School Commfttee for 1947 was held in the school last week. Those present were Messrs. A. E. Jeffrey (chairman) , • L. L Bowler (secretary), E. Barber, I. Peni, Mesdames W. Easton and C. Stern, An apology for absence was received •from Mr. S. Free,, The headmaster (Mr. F. O. Burtt) was also in attendance: Mr Burtt took the opportunity of extending his thanks to members of the committee for their work in administrating the affairs of the school so ably durinsg- tne past year, and concluded by extending the season's greetings to all members. Mr. Jeffrey replied with a few well chosen words, and thanked the ladies for their most generous assistance on the calf judging day. Other members of the committee also spoke. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to Mr. .G. W. Munford for the interest ha had taken in the school by judging the lambs in that section of . the school agricultural club. In his report to the committee the headmaster stated that at the end of the month-the-roll was 137 boys and 142 girls. The average attendance for the month was 130 boys and 132 girls. This represented the highest percentage for the year. There were five new pupils admitted and one withdrawn during the month. "Miss J. MacLean who occupied a relieving position- on the staff for five weeks has returned to Training college and her place has been taken by Miss W. L. McKinlay, who will remain on the staff until the end of the year," continued Mr. Burtt's report. "During the month the school was visited by Mr. D. K. Guy, a member of tlie education board, and Mr. Drummond, architect, who authorised certain work to be carried out. Mr. W. Hesse, the agricultural supervisor of the education board also visited the school. The district nurse's inspection of children was carried out as usual. "A well-attended ■meeting of the Parents' and Teachers' Association was addressed by Mr. N. A.. Byrne, principal of the Horowhenua Colege. In view of the fact that the ;chools have been closed by the Health Department, there will be no further meetings of the association this year. The annual calf judging day was held with a record : number of ( entries^ p$ bbth calves and lambs.' A vei-y ~pleasing feature was the entry " of yearlings and two-year-olds." The school has td thafik - Miss Gardner, Mrs, Ward .and Mr. S.. Free for boxes of flower plants^ and Mr. Bowker and Mr. D. H. Gardner, of Levin, for dahlia bulbs.
