CLOSER LAND SETTLEMENT RECOMMENDED
. WELLINGTON, Decr 8. The special committee established by "v the Dominion Council of Federated Farmers, in a preliminary report on land policy, recommends the closer settlement of land an'd ' production increases. It considers that the cost of realising the programme should be the resp'onsibility of the people as a whole, and that in the case of land acquired by the State for subdivision the difference between the just price to the vendor and the subsequent productive value to settlers should be a charge upon public funds. ■ Other recommendations are: That all State assisted settlers should have the. .option of the freehold; there should be a review.of native lands with- the obj ect ! of bringing thCm into production without delay; there should be generous financial aid to enable suitable men to establish themselves as settlers; unduly large holdings should be sub-divided by voluntary sale and purchase, The conqlusion is being eiuculated to provincial executives of the organisation and from their opinions the committee will prepare a complete survey for the next Dominion conference of the organisation.
