INCONCLUSIVE CAMPAIGN IN NORTHERN CHINA

RHANGHAI, Nov. 8. The Chinese Communists may have lost the Manchurian campaign but they won the rc-al victory, according to an American ol)server who has just returned from ten m.onths in Mukden, Changchung and other Manchurian war cities. The Communist offensive — the sixtli since the Japanese surrendel- — had cost them more men than it cost the Nationalist army, but it had further damaged China's shaky eeonomy, demoralised the defending forces and brought the Communists a step closer to their ultimate goal of wiping out tlia Government 's Manchurian eorridor. Meanwhile inconclusive skirmislies are reported from Manchuria where both sides are digging in for the. winter. The main warfare is now eentred in the south where the Communists are pressing their attacks on Yulin.
