LUCKY LAST PASSENGER TO FLY IN AOTEAROA
AUCKLAND, Nov. 9. As the lucky last fare-paying passenger to have stepped out of the veteran flying boat Aotearoa at the close of its active service this afternoon, Mr. T. H. Butchart, aged 40;* engineer, of Remuera, will be given a free trip to Sydney and back by Tasman Empir% Airways, Ltd. Mr. Butchart was oue of 95 people taken m the aircraft on live special fiights. over the city and Hauraki. G-ulf during the day. The total sum of £190 raised in fares will be handed over by the eompany to the Aid to Britain campaign. None of the 19 passengers who made the fifth and linal flight had any inkling beforehand of the gesture that was to be made by the coinpany to mark the retirement of the Aotearoa. "This is marvellous, " said Mr. Butchart. ' ' I have always wanted to see Kvdney and the bridge." A returned soldier who served in. the Pacific during the Second World War, he is married with no children. He said he had flown before but never in a flyingboat. He did not anticipate any trouble in getting leave from the footwear faetory where he worked 111 order to make the trip to Sydney.
