Presst Assodation)
(P&r
GISBORNE, Nov. 10. A verdiot of death from a pistol shot wound, there being no evilence to show how the wound was inflicted, was returned by the coroner, Mr. F. L. Walton, at the resumed inquest on Patrick George Land, 24, farmer labourer, who was found dead at Waipaoa on October 18. . . Police evidence showed that ' an; Italian pattern pistol, apparently a war souvenir, was found beside the body in a whare on the station, with a spent cartridge on the floor and two bullets in the weapon. There was £29 in the deceased's pockets, but nothing in the dead man's property to give any indication that he intended to take nis own life. A Maori station employee said that when he handed Land the proeeeds of his pay cheque, £29 odd, that day, he was in normal health. Detective-Sergeant Waterson, conducting the inquest, said it was one more illustration of the danger of firearms brought back to New Zealand by returned soldiers.
