£1000 GIFT FROM JOCKEY TO CHARITY

A gift of £1000 by Joe Cbilda, who rode King George V ;s racehorses for 12 years, to the Mayor of Portsmouth (wlio may give it to any charity he thinks lit) has surprised some people. " They probably thought that Childs was just another jockey. By no means. When he fmished racing in 1935, Joe Childs owned property in England and in Franee, where he was born in 18&0. Sinee then he has run a garage ana owned a racing stud. Until a few weeks ago he was managing director of the Portsmouth Greyhound -racing stadiurn. When Childs was riding jockeys did not get the big retainers paid nowadars to men like Gordon Eichards, Smirke and Britt. - But he was much in demand. He probably earned £3000 or £4000 a season for six or seven seasons — and he was careful. Childs ivas one of the linest judges of pace ever known. His finishes were forceful, but always elegant; the efforts of a niaster. He has set features and a black jowl which gave him a rather forbidding appearance. Bets have been made, and won, that he would leave the paddock, win a big race, unsaddle, and weigh in without smiling.
