CENTENARY OF MAORI CHURCH
Rangiatea, the Maori Anglican /Church at Otaki, was one of the most historic in New Zealand, said the Rev. Paora Temuera yesterday, and plans were in preparation for celebrating its centenary. No general appeal had yet been issued, but preliminary steps were being taken to collate material for a history of the building, also for the organising of celebrations. When the church was built, almost a century ago, under the leadership of Te Rauparaha, whose remains were later interred in the grounds of Rangiatea, the people of that time had put the best artistic craftsmanship into the building, and the tukutuku, or reed work, had won the admiration of Sir Apirana Ngata and other authorities. However, the time had come when restoration work was essential, said Mr. Temuera, who is the priest in charge, and he trusted that that work would be completed in time for the centenary celebrations.
