a pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by the large number of members who attended the monthly meeting of the Poroutawhao Women's Institute. Mrs. Carle occupied the chair. Mrs. Speirs gave a very interest- . ing. and instructive demonstration of rug making. a reversible rug which Mrs. Spiers had on exhibition was an excellent piete of work, and was greatly admired by members. Mrs. Carle thanked Mrs. Speirs for her demonstration and presented1 her with a' bouquet of spring, bulbs. The results of the monthly competiti'ons were as follows: shrubs, Mrs. Hanham; best bloom: Mrs. Scott; vegetables, Mrs. Old. a competition arranged by Mrs. Hanham was won by Mrs. Tait. a dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames: Tait and Vickers.
