MUSIC CLUB'S EVENING

PROGRAMME OF RUSSIAN MUSIC PROVIDED

The September meeting of the Levin Music Club was held recently in the Presbyterian Church Hall. The president, Mrs. F." S. Allen, welcomed those present and mentioned that the last function for the season would take place on Wednesday, October 29. ' The members then provided an interesting programme, which consisted mainly of Russian music in song and pianoforte. Pianoforte section { "Prelude in C Sharp Minor" (Rachmaninoff ) , played by Miss Gardner. "Prelude in G Minor" (Rachmaninoff) and "Pathetique Sonata" (Beethoven) , by Miss Alison Todd- Duet: "The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" (Tschaikovsky) , by Mesdames F. Routley and F. S. Allen. Song section: "Dark Eyes" (Russian f olk song arranged by Harold Ramsay) and "The Red Sarafan" (A. Varlanov) by Mrs. H. Easton. Some enjoyable musical monologues were rendered by Mrs. A. biography on the life of Rachmaninoff was read by Miss Gardner. Another most appreciated_ section of the programme was the playing of a set of fine records. This set was Tschaikovsky's Concerto in B flat Minor, Opus 23, played by- Arthur ' Rubinstein and the London Symphony Orchestra. The club choir, consisting of Mesdames D. P. Todd, T. Satherley, W: Devine, F. Baumber, C. Bennett, II. Baumber, H. Easton, A. Haley and N. Thornley, and- Misses Nalder, Ryrie and Gardner, rendered two items, "Fairies Lightly Swaying" and "In a Fairy Boat," both by Cuthbert Harris. The choir was under the conductorship of Mr. F. Baumber and the aeeompaniste was Mrs. A. B. Coles. Supper concluded a very happy evening. The hostesses were Mfs. Trim and Misses Gardner and Ryrie. Floral decorations of vases and bowls .of spring flowers made a fine display.
