CYCLIST CONVICTED

FAILED TQ GIVE SIGNAL WHEN TURNING RIGHT Failure to indicate his intention of turning to the right when cycling in Oxford Street led to the conviction in the Magistrate's Court, Levin, of an elderly man, John Halberg. Prosecuting, Sergeant W. Grainger, stated that the police were not seeking a penalty in this case, but Were bringing it before the court as a warning to other cyclists. Defendant was 77 years of age and had been a driver of a motor-car until recently. He had been cycling north. of Oxford Street, and had parcels under his arm. He had told thq police that he had looked back and had seen a car following, but thought that he "had plenty of time in which to turn.

In reply to a question from the magistrate, Mr. A. M- Goulding, S..iy[., defpndant stated that he ha,d ridden a bjcycle since youth. "You are quite capable then, o,f handling a bicycle efficiently. There are some who are not," said Mr. Goulding. Sergeant Grainger said that the motorist had. observed the cyclist and was giving him a wide berth. "Apparently he is one of thesq motorists who don't like cyclists," he added. Defendant had turned suddenly in front of him.* "It is not generally known to all. cyclists that they are bound under the regulations to giye the correct signals," said Mr. Qoulding, "but you, as previously a' driver of a car, should havb known." He entered a conviction and ordered defendant to pay costs amounting to 10s. Motorists' Breaches Failure to yield theTight of way, ■resulted in a motorist, L. J. Batchelor, bemg fined £1 10s and costs 10s. Traffic Inspector M. Kehoe proser cuted. For driving his vehicle in Oxford Street without due care and attention, C. W. Reid (Mr. J. Todd) paki a penalty of £1, with court costs 10s. .
