Whale Rammed by Ship
The Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.'s 15,000-ton liner, Athenic, rammed a large whale when crossing the Caribbean Sea on her journey from Londoil to Auckland. When the Athenic reached port on Monday, the vessel's commander, Captain D. Aitchison, said that the impact, which occurred about 4 o'clock one morning, was not felt aboard, nor did the weight of the whale around the liner's bow affect her movement. The whale was noticed jammed on the ship's bows by a look-out man. Attempts to drop the monster were at fifst unsuccessful and finally the liner was stopped and put astern before -the whale floated off and sank. The Venerable Archdeacon Alan Julian Petrie, vicar of St. Mary's Chureh, Merivale, died last night at the age of 51 years.
